Fijian Coach Emphasizes Need for Strong Performance Against All Blacks

The Flying Fijians will need to match the All Blacks in all aspects of play to gain an advantage in Saturday’s Test match in San Diego, USA.

This is the view of Super Rugby Pacific-winning coach Vern Cotter. Speaking to SUNsports yesterday, the Blues head coach emphasized the importance of the Flying Fijians matching the All Blacks’ physicality.

“They (Flying Fijians) must play with confidence,” Cotter said. “They must build their set piece, kick smart, and quickly get back into the game. That means getting off the ground with a high work rate.”

He stressed the necessity for the Fijians to be disciplined and avoid conceding penalties. “There must be no penalties,” Cotter reiterated.

With All Blacks head coach Scott Robertson and his assistants still settling into their roles, Cotter believes Fiji head coach Mick Byrne will see this as a good opportunity to disrupt the All Blacks.

The All Blacks enter this match after winning a two-Test series against England, securing victories of 16-15 and 24-17. Cotter expects Robertson to make some changes to his Match 23 squad.

“There will be changes as they look to give opportunities to fringe players and others before the Four Nations,” he added.

Cotter mentioned that Byrne, his assistant coaches, and players will be excited about the opportunity to play the All Blacks on neutral ground.

“They have to perform well and show the improvements made over the Rugby World Cup and Super Rugby. We’re looking forward to it, and it will be a great contest.”
