The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has launched an investigation into concerns regarding potential price increases and supply shortages of whole bird chicken at various retail locations. This move follows consumer complaints about rising prices and the lack of availability for certain sizes of whole bird chicken.
FCCC Chief Executive Joel Abraham reported that the commission has reached out to major suppliers Crest and Rooster for clarification regarding the current supply conditions and any pricing adjustments.
“While both suppliers have claimed there are no price increases or supply problems, we are receiving contradictory reports from retailers,” Abraham stated. “Retailers have indicated shortages and the removal of discounts, which significantly affects weekly retail prices.”
The inconsistency between the information from manufacturers and retailers is a major concern for the FCCC, which is actively looking into the situation. Abraham emphasized that the FCCC would take firm action against any entities found to be giving misleading information or taking advantage of consumers by withholding discounts or manipulating supply.
“As part of this initiative, the FCCC is also prepared to suggest policy changes regarding imports if it is found that local suppliers are not acting justly,” he added.
“Our duty is to safeguard consumers from unfair business practices, and we will rigorously enforce regulatory measures. We will not tolerate any attempts to raise prices or limit product availability to the detriment of Fijian consumers.”
Abraham also warned that traders or manufacturers providing false or misleading information will face severe consequences under the law. With the festive season approaching, the FCCC’s primary focus is to ensure that whole bird chicken, an essential item for Fijian households, remains affordable, accessible, and available. Further updates will be provided as the investigation develops.
