The Fiji Teachers Union (FTU) has expressed concern over the decline in the pass rate for the Fiji Year 13 Certificate Examination (FY13CE) this year. The Ministry of Education reported a five percent decrease in the pass rate, with 86 percent of the 8,603 students who sat for the exam passing, compared to 91 percent in 2023.

Union general secretary Muniappa Goundar emphasized that the drop is a shared concern for all stakeholders in the education sector, as it highlights broader issues affecting students’ performance. He acknowledged the hard work of teachers in preparing students but pointed out the need to understand the factors contributing to this decline.

The challenges impacting performance include the ongoing recovery from post-COVID pandemic education disruptions, lack of resources in some schools, and socio-economic difficulties faced by many families. The FTU sees this situation as an opportunity for collective reflection and action, urging collaboration between the Ministry of Education, school administrators, and other relevant entities. They advocate for enhancing teacher support, improving learning resources, increasing student support, and fostering parental and community engagement.

On a positive note, the Ministry of Education recognized ten secondary schools that achieved a perfect 100 percent pass rate. These schools include Nadarivatu Secondary, Nilsen High, Tavua District Secondary, and several others, showcasing the dedication and success of these educational institutions.

Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro acknowledged the achievements of two government schools, Adi Cakobau and Vunisea Secondary, which improved their results significantly. He stressed the importance of providing students with the support they need as they explore their options for higher education, vocational training, or joining the workforce.

The FTU remains committed to collaborating with the Ministry and other stakeholders to design strategies that address the decline in performance and fortify Fiji’s education system moving forward.

In light of the challenges faced, the focus on collaboration and support for teachers and students is a beacon of hope for improving educational outcomes in Fiji.
