Fiji Women’s Futsal Team Prepares for Historic OFC Nations Cup Showdown

The Digicel Fiji Women’s Futsal team is preparing for a strong showing at the first-ever OFC Women’s Futsal Nations Cup in the Solomon Islands, which is set to take place from August 17 to 25. The tournament will have five teams competing for the opportunity to represent Oceania at the FIFA Futsal Women’s World Cup in the Philippines next year.

Fiji Football Association CEO Mohammed Yusuf expressed his optimism regarding the team’s chances, noting that the lineup consists of national-level players who are well-prepared for the competition. He emphasized the experience and talent within the team, which boosts confidence in their ability to perform under pressure.

“The coach has selected all national-level players for the women’s futsal team, and with their experience, I believe they won’t be under pressure,” Yusuf stated. “We have high hopes for these girls to reach the finals and hopefully win, securing a spot in the Futsal World Cup next year.”

Head coach Jerry Sam, who meticulously picked the best players from around the nation, is also confident in the team’s ability to succeed. Despite the challenging decisions forced by Fiji’s wealth of talent, Sam remarked that the squad is well-prepared for the upcoming competition.

“The team has gone through extensive training over the past three weeks, focusing on fitness and readiness,” Sam commented. “This tournament is significant, being the first of its kind.”

Fiji is set to compete against the Solomon Islands, Tahiti, New Zealand, and Tonga during the tournament.
