Fiji Women’s Football Team Makes Historic FIFA Championship Debut

The Fiji Under-20 women’s football team recently presented the traditional i-tatau to President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere at the State House in Suva. The event took place on Friday, where the President lauded the team’s accomplishments and acknowledged the hard work of the coaches, management, and the young athletes.

“This marks a significant achievement, as it is the first time Fiji has a women’s team competing at such a prestigious level in the FIFA World Championship in Colombia, and it is indeed commendable,” President Ratu Wiliame stated.

Fiji, known for its prowess in rugby, is increasingly gaining attention for its football achievements, with the President noting the nation has consistently “punched above its weight” in international sports. He highlighted Fiji’s remarkable success in various tournaments, particularly in sevens rugby, and indicated that the women’s football team is opening a new chapter in Fiji’s sporting history.

“What you have accomplished is extraordinary,” he expressed, showing his gratitude for their commitment. The Head of State also recognized the sacrifices made by the players and their families, and stressed the critical role of team manager Naziah Ali-Krishna.

“We will continue to support and pray for the team and management as you guide and mentor these young women representing Fiji,” he remarked.
