TUI Cakau Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu has been elected as the next President of Fiji. He succeeds outgoing President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, garnering substantial support from members of Parliament with 37 out of 53 votes in his favor during the recent voting process. Ratu Naiqama defeated Opposition nominee Ratu Meli Tavaiqia, who received 16 votes.
The Coalition Government and several members of the Opposition who supported Ratu Naiqama extended their congratulations following his election. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka highlighted the encouragement he felt from his Coalition partners before the nomination and emphasized that Ratu Naiqama’s appointment reflects the will of the people, as Parliament acts as an electoral college.
Biman Prasad, leader of the National Federation Party and Deputy Prime Minister, remarked that Ratu Naiqama’s presidency will serve as a unifying force for Fiji. He addressed those criticizing Ratu Naiqama for past controversies, advocating for a focus on truth and reconciliation rather than lingering in the past.
SODELPA leader Viliame Gavoka praised Ratu Naiqama’s experience in governance, assuring that stability will prevail under his presidency. He also honored outgoing President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere for his strength during challenging periods for the nation.
Ratu Naiqama is scheduled to be sworn in on November 11.
