For the first time in history, an all-female boxing team from Victoria, Australia, is participating in the Fiji Amateur Boxing competitions for juniors, youths, and women. The event is being held at the Vashist Muni Memorial Primary School Hall in Navua.

The team consists of eight boxers of varying experience levels, from juniors to elite competitors, who are set to face local female boxers from the Navua region. Fiji’s National Boxing coach, Cam Todd, shared his enthusiasm about this historic event. “It’s possibly the first time in Fiji’s history that we have a women-only team coming from Victoria, Australia,” he stated. Todd noted that the Australian team brought a diverse group of fighters, including juniors, youths, and elite boxers, to compete against local talent.

The event also serves as a fundraiser for the local boxing club hosting the competition. Todd explained, “We wanted to help raise some money for their club. Many of the girls boxing today from Fiji come from this area, so they have strong local support.”

The tournament features a total of 25 bouts, including eight international matches. Todd highlighted that the international fighters would compete against different opponents from Fiji in subsequent rounds.

Todd emphasized his commitment to enhancing women’s boxing in Fiji. “My main goal is to develop women’s boxing and get more women of all ages involved,” he remarked. He collaborates with colleagues in Australia to facilitate development opportunities for female boxers, noting the positive outcome of their partnership.

Impressed by the emerging boxing talent in Fiji, Todd stated, “Every tournament I attend, I take notes and observe young boxers from the age of nine and up. Fiji has incredible talent in amateur boxing, and the athletes are passionate about it.” He also mentioned the capability of young local fighters, including 9 to 10-year-olds, who are excelling in the sport.

The competition will continue today at 1 PM, and Todd encourages everyone to come and support their local boxers, promising an exciting day of boxing.
