The Fiji weightlifting team is gearing up for their upcoming competition in December, according to coach Henry Elder. The team recently participated in the 2024 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships, where they secured medals across various categories.
Elder has already formulated a plan to address areas for improvement and to enhance the team’s strengths. “I’ve gone back to the drawing board on this,” he stated. This week, they have begun identifying specific areas for individual and team development, including management strategies.
He emphasized the importance of fostering a culture of reflection within the team. “Post-competition reflections are crucial because they help us understand both our successes and shortcomings, allowing us to assess what improvements can be made,” Elder explained. He believes that ongoing self-evaluation is essential for progress.
Elder expressed pride in the young lifters who constitute a significant portion of the team, acknowledging their journey and growth. “I’m very excited about the achievements of our young athletes; juniors and youths are the future of not just weightlifting, but all sports,” he said. He also expressed gratitude for the positive results achieved by these talented athletes, highlighting that it is a collective effort.
