Fiji Urges Ocean’s Vital Role at COP29 Climate Talks

The ocean serves as a crucial resource for many Pacific island nations, yet it is not officially addressed on the agenda at the Conference of Parties (COP). Dr. Sivendra Michael, the Permanent Secretary for Environment, expressed optimism about incorporating ocean-related discussions into other negotiation topics at the upcoming World Climate Conference.

According to Dr. Michael, ocean issues have never been included as a standalone agenda item at COP, but are typically woven into various negotiation tracks. He emphasized the need to adapt to the changing dynamics of climate change and its effects on the use of marine and ocean resources. “Integrating oceans into the negotiations is key; however, it is not currently listed as a standalone topic,” he stated.

Dr. Michael hopes to underscore the ocean’s essential role in climate systems and global environmental sustainability. He added, “We aim to establish and clearly define our positions as a Pacific region so that we can engage in meaningful discussions with our negotiation partners. Our goal is to see these topics represented in the negotiations and reflected in the final texts.”
