Fiji Urges Citizens to Evacuate Amid Escalating Middle East Tensions

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced that the government is advising Fijians to evacuate areas impacted by the ongoing conflict amid rising tensions between Israel and Iran. In a statement to FijiLive, Rabuka emphasized that the government is dedicated to ensuring the safety of its citizens and peacekeepers who are engaged in promoting peace in conflict-ridden regions globally.

The Prime Minister noted that Fijians were aware of the risks involved before the situation escalated. Nonetheless, he reiterated Fiji’s stance regarding the tensions in the Middle East, describing the conflict between Israel and Iran as a bilateral issue, while reaffirming Fiji’s commitment to peacekeeping efforts through the United Nations in the region.

Rabuka stated that the government recognizes the importance of territorial integrity, which is a key aspect of the resolution acknowledged by the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon. He remarked that countries have retreated to their internationally recognized borders, but there have been violations, leading nations to defend their citizens and territories.

He highlighted Fiji’s longstanding involvement in peacekeeping since 1978, committing to continue these efforts until the UN withdraws from conflict areas. The Prime Minister assured that Fijian military personnel on duty will stay in affected regions as part of their commitment to maintaining peace in the Middle East.

In relation to the conflict, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has asserted that Iran will “pay the price” for its missile strikes. Israel is reportedly considering various retaliatory actions, which may include strikes on Iranian oil refineries, military sites, or nuclear installations. U.S. President Joe Biden has voiced support for Israel’s right to respond, urging that any retaliation should be measured and proportional.
