Fiji Unveils Unique Sanctuary for Women Cancer Survivors

The Self Care Retreat (Fiji) Hub officially opened its doors in Nabua yesterday, providing a vital support center for women who are cancer survivors. This new facility represents a crucial development in the ongoing effort to aid those recovering from cancer.

Mereane Vavataga, the CEO of Self Care Retreat Fiji, highlighted the importance of the hub, describing it as a refuge where women can seek solace during overwhelming times. “It’s an oasis where women cancer survivors can come when sickness overwhelms them,” Ms. Vavataga stated. “They can rest here and find nourishment. It’s a safe space where they can talk about their experiences and the challenges they encounter.”

The NGO was established in 2021 with a mission to support the spiritual, emotional, and mental healing of women cancer survivors. Twice a year, the organization takes different groups of survivors to a hotel to foster relationships and build trust. Following these retreats, the participants engage in a three-week Bible study program focusing on various aspects of healing.

Senior Pastor Manasa Kolivuso from Faith Harvest Church in Nausori officiated the opening and commended the initiative. “Thank you so much for setting up this hub so that people can find a safe haven, a refuge, a place where they can connect with others who care,” he remarked.

During the event, cancer survivor Bulamarau Tikoduadua shared her moving experience. Reflecting on her journey, she noted, “A year ago today, I was completely paralyzed. My cancer journey was short but aggressive.” She emphasized the importance of support systems like the Self Care Retreat Hub, expressing gratitude for the organization as a crucial source of companionship during the often isolating aftercare period.

Ms. Vavataga also spoke about the organization’s aspirations to establish a hospice, though she acknowledged that the retreat is just the starting point. To sustain its operations, Self Care Retreat Fiji heavily relies on donations and partnerships. Ms. Vavataga mentioned her personal efforts to raise funds, which included shaving her head as part of the ‘Shave it or Save it’ campaign earlier this month.
