The Self Care Retreat Hub for women cancer survivors officially opened in Nabua yesterday, marking an important step in support for those affected by cancer. Mereane Vavataga, the CEO of Self Care Retreat Fiji, emphasized the significance of the new hub.

“This space serves as an oasis for women cancer survivors facing overwhelming challenges,” Ms. Vavataga stated. “It provides a place for them to rest and nourish themselves. It’s a secure environment where they can share their experiences and difficulties.”

Established in 2021, the nonprofit organization is dedicated to aiding the spiritual, emotional, and mental healing of women who have survived cancer. Ms. Vavataga explained that they host two retreats each year, where a different group of survivors can develop relationships and build trust. Following these retreats, participants engage in a three-week Bible study program focused on spiritual, emotional, and inner healing.

During the opening ceremony, Senior Pastor Manasa Kolivuso of Faith Harvest Church in Nausori commended this initiative. “Thank you for creating this hub where individuals can find a safe haven, a refuge, and connect with others who share similar concerns,” he remarked.

Cancer survivor Bulamarau Tikoduadua shared her testimony, highlighting the urgent need for supportive networks like the Self Care Retreat Hub. “A year ago I was completely paralyzed. My cancer journey was short but aggressive,” Ms. Tikoduadua recounted. She expressed gratitude for the organization, noting that post-cancer treatment can often feel isolating.

Looking ahead, Ms. Vavataga mentioned the organization’s aspiration to establish a hospice, seeing the current hub as just the beginning. The Self Care Retreat Fiji depends on donations and partnerships for its ongoing operations. Ms. Vavataga revealed that she even participated in a fundraising campaign known as ‘Shave it or Save it’ to help finance the new building.
