The Self Care Retreat (Fiji) Hub, a dedicated space for women who are cancer survivors, inaugurated yesterday in Nabua, marking a crucial step in providing assistance for those battling cancer.
Mereane Vavataga, the CEO of Self Care Retreat Fiji, emphasized the significance of the new facility. “It’s an oasis for women cancer survivors to find solace when they feel overwhelmed by illness,” Ms. Vavataga stated. “Here, they can rest and find nourishment. It’s a secure environment for them to discuss their experiences and the challenges they encounter.”
Founded in 2021, the NGO aims to support women’s spiritual, emotional, and mental recovery after cancer. Ms. Vavataga explained that twice a year, they take different groups of survivors to a hotel to foster relationships and trust. Upon returning, participants engage in a three-week Bible study program that explores aspects of spiritual and emotional healing, as well as personal transformation.
Senior Pastor Manasa Kolivuso from Faith Harvest Church in Nausori, who officiated the opening ceremony, commended the initiative. “Thank you for establishing this hub as a safe haven for individuals to connect with those who care,” he remarked.
During the event, cancer survivor Bulamarau Tikoduadua shared her inspiring journey. “A year ago, I was completely paralyzed. My cancer experience was brief but intense,” Ms. Tikoduadua recalled, underscoring the urgent necessity for supportive networks like the Self Care Retreat Hub. “I’m truly thankful for this organization because post-treatment can be quite isolating,” she noted.
Ms. Vavataga shared future goals for the organization, including the aspiration to open a hospice, while indicating that this is just the beginning. The Self Care Retreat Fiji continues to depend on donations and partnerships to maintain its activities. “I even had to shave my hair to raise funds for this building,” she revealed, referring to her involvement in the recent ‘Shave it or Save it’ fundraising campaign.
