Fiji Unveils New Tourism Office to Boost Vanua Levu’s Development

NaVualiku, also known as the ‘Fiji Tourism Development Programme in Vanua Levu,’ officially opened its office in Savusavu Town last Saturday. The new office is located at the JKS Building, with the inauguration led by the Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Viliame Gavoka, given that the programme is governed by his ministry.

Mr. Gavoka emphasized that the office symbolizes more than just a physical space; it signifies the programme’s commitment to driving impact, developing strategies, mobilizing resources, and establishing a foundation for sustainable growth in the region. He highlighted that the ministry’s goals extend beyond attracting more tourists to Vanua Levu, with a primary focus on improving the lives of local residents. “The office will be crucial in ensuring that the benefits of the NaVualiku programme reach every community on this island,” he stated.

The World Bank Group’s country manager for Fiji, Stefano Mocci, announced that the project is backed by a US$200 million financing package from the World Bank. This initiative will be executed in three phases over the next decade through a programmatic approach. Mocci noted the commitment of the World Bank and its partners to support the Fijian government’s efforts to transform Vanua Levu into a vibrant tourism hub that generates employment, particularly for women and youth, attracts both domestic and international investments, and stimulates economic growth—all aimed at enhancing the quality of life for the people of Vanua Levu.

He added that, beyond financial support, the World Bank will contribute its global and regional expertise to aid in the project’s implementation. “This new office is a vital element of the upcoming work, as it will help accelerate results on the ground, improve coordination and collaboration, and strengthen partnerships in the northern region,” Mocci explained. He concluded by expressing pride in supporting Fiji’s developmental goals under the ‘Look North’ policy, aimed at revitalizing the tourism sector in Vanua Levu.
