Fiji’s judicial branch commemorated the grand opening of the new Ba Court complex today, a cutting-edge facility that cost $29 million. This initiative signifies a substantial step in the judiciary’s mission to decentralize services, making legal support more accessible to communities across the nation.
During the inauguration, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka emphasized the government’s dedication to promoting peace and prosperity in Fiji. He reaffirmed the Coalition Government’s commitment to upholding fundamental human rights and ensuring equitable access to justice for all citizens. “Every individual has the right to seek justice under the law,” he stated, underscoring the importance of accessibility in legal matters.
Rabuka celebrated the new Ba Court facility as a significant achievement, noting its modern amenities designed to ease the burden on the Ba Court’s operations. He praised the Acting Chief Justice, Honorable Justice Salesi Temo, for the vision that led to establishing a High Court in this complex, significantly reducing the need for litigants to travel to Lautoka for High Court proceedings.
The upgraded Ba High Court will now handle appeals related to the Central Agricultural Tribunal, as well as civil, criminal, and family court cases, extending its services beyond Ba province to neighboring areas such as Ra, Tavua, Bukuya, Magodro, and Nadarivatu. This expansion of services highlights the judiciary’s ongoing commitment to enhancing justice delivery in the region.
In his closing remarks, Rabuka acknowledged the judiciary’s commitment to continuous improvement in fulfilling its constitutional responsibilities. He emphasized the importance of collective effort in driving sustainable development and creating a prosperous Fiji, urging everyone to work together for a more resilient future for the coming generations.
This new facility not only enhances the judicial process but also brings hope for greater access to justice in Fiji, showcasing a positive trajectory for the nation’s legal infrastructure.
