Fiji Unveils Landmark Foreign Policy White Paper 2024: What’s Next?

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka officially launched Fiji’s inaugural Foreign Policy White Paper 2024 yesterday, marking a significant milestone in the development of the country’s foreign services.

During the event, Rabuka explained that this initiative outlines Fiji’s foreign policy priorities and provides a strategic direction for the government’s international engagements over the next decade. He emphasized that the policy highlights the government’s commitment to securing Fiji’s position in the global community and ensuring a prosperous and safe future for all Fijians.

Rabuka pointed out that the Foreign Policy is designed to navigate the complex challenges faced by the nation and acts as a clear declaration of the government’s intent and Fiji’s role on the world stage. He reaffirmed Fiji’s status as a pivotal hub in the Pacific region, stating that the foundation of the policy is a comprehensive approach that integrates various elements—both domestic and external—and recognizes that national security and prosperity hinge on a well-defined understanding of national interests and values.

Additionally, the Prime Minister noted that Fiji’s Foreign Policy aligns with the National Development Plan (NDP) and the proposed actions resulting from the current National Security and Defence Review. Together, these components form the government’s strategy to enhance Fiji’s strategic and economic interests while fostering social cohesion.

He outlined three core pillars of Fiji’s foreign policy: sovereignty, security, and prosperity. Rabuka expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for leading a collaborative effort that included insights from various ministries and external entities.

In concluding his remarks, the Prime Minister asserted that the Foreign Policy White Paper serves as a significant roadmap for future generations, ensuring they inherit a nation that is secure, prosperous, and respected on the global platform.
