Pacific Specialist Healthcare (PSH) in Nadi has introduced Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT), a groundbreaking service aimed at treating chronic wounds such as diabetic foot ulcers, burns, and conditions like decompression sickness. The facility was inaugurated by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Strategic Planning, National Development & Statistics, Professor Prasad.
The Hyperbaric Chamber is designed to enhance recovery processes and is expected to play a crucial role in reducing diabetes-related amputations. Professor Prasad highlighted the alarming statistic that there is one amputation every 12 hours in Fiji due to complications arising from non-communicable diseases, particularly diabetes. He emphasized the need for urgent action to alter this trend.
The launch of the HBOT service represents a significant advancement in improving health outcomes and mitigating the necessity for amputations in Fiji. Professor Prasad noted that this initiative showcases Fiji’s commitment to enhancing its healthcare capabilities. Furthermore, the introduction of this service is anticipated to create opportunities for collaborations with regional healthcare providers and could position Fiji as an attractive destination for medical tourism, thereby strengthening the country’s healthcare sector.
This development is a hopeful sign for the future of healthcare in Fiji, promising better health outcomes and improved quality of life for those suffering from chronic conditions. By investing in advanced treatment options, the country is taking important steps toward reducing the burden of non-communicable diseases and improving overall public health.
