Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka officially unveiled Fiji’s inaugural Foreign Policy White Paper 2024, marking a significant milestone in the development of the nation’s foreign services. During the launch event, Rabuka emphasized that this document is the first of its kind for Fiji, clearly articulating the country’s foreign policy priorities and outlining the government’s strategic direction for international relations over the next ten years.

Rabuka described the Foreign Policy as a commitment by the government to secure Fiji’s position within the global community and to foster a prosperous and secure future for all Fijians. He outlined that the policy aims to address the complex foreign policy challenges faced by the nation, serving as a definitive declaration of Fiji’s role in the world.

The Prime Minister underscored that this policy reaffirms Fiji’s status as a central hub in the Pacific region. He stated that its foundation is built on a comprehensive national approach, integrating both domestic and external elements of policy, and highlighting the importance of understanding national interests and values in advancing them.

Additionally, Rabuka noted that Fiji’s Foreign Policy aligns with the National Development Plan (NDP) and the proposed responses to the ongoing National Security and Defence Review. These components serve as the framework for the government’s strategy to promote Fiji’s strategic and economic interests while enhancing social cohesion.

He identified three interconnected pillars of Fiji’s foreign policy: sovereignty, security, and prosperity. The Prime Minister expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for leading a collaborative effort to incorporate input from various ministries, agencies, and external stakeholders.

Rabuka concluded by stating that the Foreign Policy White Paper represents more than just a traditional document; it is a roadmap designed to ensure that future generations will inherit a secure, prosperous, and respected nation on the global stage.
