Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka introduced Fiji’s inaugural Foreign Policy White Paper 2024 yesterday, marking a significant milestone in the development of the nation’s foreign services.
During the launch event, Rabuka stated that this initiative outlines Fiji’s foreign policy priorities and establishes the government’s strategic direction for international engagements over the next ten years. He emphasized that the foreign policy demonstrates the government’s commitment to securing Fiji’s status in the global arena while ensuring a prosperous and safe future for all Fijians.
Rabuka noted that the foreign policy provides a roadmap for addressing the complex challenges Fiji faces in international relations. He described it as a clear declaration of the government’s position regarding Fiji’s role in the world, reaffirming the country’s status as a central hub within the Pacific region.
He explained that the foundation of this policy is a comprehensive approach that brings together all aspects of policy—both domestic and external. It acknowledges that Fiji’s security and prosperity are contingent on a lucid understanding of its national interests and values, and on strategies to promote them effectively.
The Prime Minister also pointed out that the foreign policy aligns with Fiji’s National Development Plan and the forthcoming National Security and Defence Review, both critical to advancing the nation’s strategic goals and enhancing social cohesion.
He highlighted three essential components of Fiji’s foreign policy: sovereignty, security, and prosperity. In closing, Rabuka expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for leading a government-wide effort to incorporate insights from various ministries, agencies, and external organizations.
He underscored that the Foreign Policy White Paper is more than just a document; it serves as a blueprint to ensure future generations inherit a secure, prosperous, and respected Fiji on the global stage.
