The Fiji National Security and Defence Review (NSDR) aims to provide a strategic framework for Fiji to effectively address the various complex challenges to its sovereignty and stability. During the NSDR’s launch at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva, Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration Pio Tikoduadua emphasized the modern security landscape’s threats, which include cybercrime, climate change, transnational crime, and geopolitical tensions. He stated that these issues necessitate a responsive and proactive approach from Fiji.
A key component of the review is the emphasis on a comprehensive strategy that involves both government and society in security efforts. Tikoduadua highlighted the essential roles of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and the Fiji Police Force, while also stressing the importance of collaboration with other government entities, civil society, and the private sector. He pointed out that national security is a collective duty that involves everyone in the community.
The Editorial Board contributing to the review’s insights includes Professor Satish Chand as Chair, along with Associate Professor Shailendra Singh, Assistant Professor Ana Rokomokoti, and NSDR Independent lead Jim Sanday. Public consultations will see community input alongside data from government and civil society to further inform the NSDR.
