Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka unveiled Fiji’s inaugural Foreign Policy White Paper 2024 yesterday, marking a significant milestone in the development of the nation’s foreign services.
During the launch, Rabuka noted that this initiative is the first of its kind, with the Foreign Policy White Paper detailing Fiji’s foreign policy priorities and setting forth the government’s strategic direction for international relations over the next decade.
The Prime Minister emphasized that this policy represents the government’s commitment to securing Fiji’s position within the global community and ensuring a prosperous and safe future for all Fijians. He remarked that the Foreign Policy outlines a roadmap to address the intricate challenges Fiji faces on the world stage and serves as a clear declaration of the government’s stance in the international arena.
Rabuka pointed out that the policy reinforces Fiji’s role as a pivotal player in the Pacific and is built on a comprehensive approach that unifies various policy elements—both domestic and external. This framework acknowledges that Fiji’s security and prosperity rely on a clear understanding of national interests and values, as well as effective strategies to promote them.
Furthermore, the Prime Minister mentioned that Fiji’s Foreign Policy aligns with the National Development Plan (NDP) and the proposed responses to the ongoing National Security and Defence Review, forming the bedrock of the government’s strategy to further enhance Fiji’s strategic and economic interests while bolstering social unity.
He outlined three interconnected pillars of Fiji’s foreign policy: sovereignty, security, and prosperity. Rabuka expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for leading a comprehensive government effort to incorporate insights from various ministries, agencies, and external entities.
“The Foreign Policy White Paper is more than just a document; it is a roadmap that promises future generations a secure, prosperous, and respected nation on the global stage,” he concluded.
