Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka unveiled Fiji’s inaugural Foreign Policy White Paper 2024 yesterday, marking a significant milestone in the development of the country’s foreign services. During the launch, Rabuka emphasized that this document represents the first initiative of its kind, clearly outlining Fiji’s foreign policy priorities and the government’s strategic direction for international relations over the next ten years.
Rabuka stated that Fiji’s Foreign Policy reflects the government’s dedication to securing the nation’s role in the global community and ensuring a thriving and secure future for all Fijians. He noted that the policy addresses the intricate foreign policy challenges the nation may encounter and serves as a clear articulation of the government’s stance and Fiji’s position on the world stage.
The Prime Minister pointed out that this Foreign Policy reinforces Fiji’s status as a pivotal hub in the Pacific region. It is built on a comprehensive approach that incorporates both domestic and external aspects of policymaking. This approach acknowledges that the security and prosperity of Fiji rely on a coherent understanding of national interests and values, and the determination of how to promote them effectively.
Furthermore, the Prime Minister indicated that Fiji’s Foreign Policy aligns with the National Development Plan (NDP) and the anticipated response to the ongoing National Security and Defence Review, creating a foundation for the government’s strategy in advancing Fiji’s strategic and economic goals while bolstering social cohesion.
He identified three interconnected pillars of Fiji’s foreign policy: sovereignty, security, and prosperity. Additionally, he expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for leading a comprehensive government-wide initiative to gather input from various ministries, agencies, and organizations beyond the public sector.
Rabuka concluded by stressing that the Foreign Policy White Paper is a crucial document, serving as a roadmap that promises a secure, prosperous, and respected future for generations to come on the global stage.
