Fiji Unveils Bold Plan to Enhance Biodiversity through Global Framework

The Cabinet has given its approval for the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) – Early Action Support Project, which will receive funding from the Global Environment Facility (GEF).

According to a statement from the Office of the Prime Minister, the GEF is the largest multilateral trust fund aimed at helping developing nations invest in environmental initiatives. It also supports the execution of significant international environmental agreements, including those related to biodiversity, climate change, chemicals, and desertification.

Fiji will utilize this project to evaluate its key biodiversity areas under the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) for 2020 – 2025, ensuring alignment with the new biodiversity targets of the Global Biodiversity Framework.

The project will take a comprehensive approach, engaging both society and government through an Inter-Ministerial NBSAP dialogue and consultations with various stakeholders, including government officials, civil society, non-governmental organizations, regional organizations, resource owners, and academic institutions.

The project is expected to wrap up by February 28, 2025.
