The Fiji National Security and Defence Review (NSDR) has been launched as a strategic initiative aimed at addressing the various challenges to Fiji’s sovereignty and stability. Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration Pio Tikoduadua introduced the NSDR at a ceremony held at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva. He emphasized that the current security landscape is fraught with issues such as cyber threats, climate change, transnational crime, and geopolitical tensions, which necessitate a proactive and adaptive response from Fiji.
One of the key components of this review is the call for a coordinated approach to security that involves all sectors of society and government. Tikoduadua highlighted the importance of collaboration between the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, the Fiji Police Force, other government agencies, civil society, and the private sector, stating that national security is a collective responsibility.
The editorial board contributing to the NSDR includes Professor Satish Chand (Chair), Associate Professor Shailendra Singh, Assistant Professor Ana Rokomokoti, and NSDR Independent lead Jim Sanday. The process of developing the NSDR involved consultations with communities, emphasizing the role of government and civil society in providing valuable data.
