NaVualiku, part of the ‘Fiji Tourism Development Programme in Vanua Levu,’ officially opened its office in Savusavu Town last Saturday. The opening ceremony took place at the JKS Building and was led by the Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Viliame Gavoka, who oversees the initiative.
Mr. Gavoka emphasized that the new office signifies more than just a physical space; it symbolizes the ministry’s commitment to making a significant impact in the community through effective strategy development, resource mobilization, and the promotion of sustainable growth. He noted that the program aims not only to increase tourist numbers in Vanua Levu but also to enhance the living standards of the local population.
He remarked, “The office will be pivotal in ensuring that the benefits of the NaVualiku program are distributed to every community on this island.”
The initiative is supported by a US$200 million financing package from the World Bank, according to the organization’s country manager for Fiji, Stefano Mocci. This multi-phase project will unfold over the next decade.
Mocci stated that the World Bank, along with key partners and stakeholders, is dedicated to assisting the Government of Fiji in developing Vanua Levu into a vibrant tourism center that will create employment opportunities, particularly for women and youth, attract both local and international investments, and stimulate economic growth, thereby enhancing the quality of life for residents.
He further explained the importance of the new office in expediting project results, improving coordination, and fostering collaboration and partnerships in the northern region of Fiji. He expressed pride in supporting the country’s development goals through its ‘Look North’ policy aimed at strengthening the tourism sector in Vanua Levu.
