The Fiji National Security and Defence Review (NSDR) has been introduced as a strategic initiative to address the complex challenges to Fiji’s sovereignty and stability. During its launch at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva, Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration Pio Tikoduadua emphasized the necessity of adapting to modern security threats, which include cyber risks, climate change, transnational crime, and geopolitical pressures.
He stressed that Fiji must remain agile and proactive in its security measures. A key aspect of the review is the encouragement of a collective approach to security, involving the entire government and society. The Minister pointed out that while the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and the Fiji Police Force are crucial, their success depends on collaboration with other governmental entities, civil society, and the private sector.
Tikoduadua reiterated that national security is a collective responsibility that requires input from all sectors. The editorial board contributing their expertise to this review includes Professor Satish Chand as Chair, along with Associate Professor Shailendra Singh, Assistant Professor Ana Rokomokoti, and NSDR Independent Lead Jim Sanday. Community consultations will also play a role, with government and civil society providing primary data for the review.
