Fiji Unveils Ambitious Development Plan for a Sustainable Future

The government officially introduced its “National Development Plan (NDP) for 2025-2029 and Vision 2050” in Suva yesterday, delineating key strategies for the nation’s future.

During the launch, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Professor Biman Prasad, who led the formulation of the NDP, emphasized the document’s importance as a response to both national and global challenges.

“This national development plan is timely, aiming to address urgent global, regional, and national issues while shaping our future as a nation,” said Professor Prasad. He noted that the plan was created through extensive consultations and reflects a broad and inclusive vision for Fiji’s future.

“My message to Fiji is that this is your plan, and we are its stewards. Whether you are a young person concerned about employment, a woman frustrated by ongoing gender inequality, an elderly person or someone with a disability worried about care and dignity, or anyone anxious about sustainability and opportunities in rural areas, know that this plan is for you. This plan belongs to all of us,” he stated.

He highlighted that although the government will spearhead this initiative, the plan’s success relies on the collaborative efforts of the business sector, civil society, and youth. The NDP addresses the needs of various groups, including youth, women, the elderly, and marginalized communities, reinforcing its ownership by all Fijians.

“We are on this journey together, and our progress cannot be hindered if we remain united in our commitment to rebuild our country and unlock its potential for our people,” Professor Prasad remarked.

The NDP is designed to propel Fiji towards resilience, sustainability, and inclusivity, establishing a clear direction for economic progress and enhanced well-being.

The event saw attendance from government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, and community leaders.
