Fiji National University (FNU) is providing free screening clinics for HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) to its students, highlighting its focus on student health and public wellness.

Dr. Henry Waqa, FNU’s General Practitioner, stated that these screening programs are essential to the university’s efforts to enhance health and wellness on campus. He emphasized, “While participation in the wellness, HIV, and STI screenings is voluntary, we strongly encourage all students to take part.” The aim is to enable early detection and prevention of illnesses, especially given the rise in new HIV cases among young individuals in Fiji. Early diagnosis can facilitate lifesaving treatment and improve health outcomes.

Currently, free Point of Care Testing (POCT) for HIV, Syphilis, and Hepatitis is available at the Nasinu UniClinic, with plans to introduce similar services at the Natabua UniClinic soon. Dr. Waqa noted, “POC testing provides a rare opportunity for our students, as only a few clinics in Suva offer such services.” Students can either schedule an appointment via email or visit the clinic any weekday from 8 am to 3:30 pm.

The testing process is designed to be simple and confidential. Students complete a Voluntary Confidential and Counselling Test (VCCT) form that gathers basic sexual history information, all of which is kept strictly confidential. The test involves a quick finger prick, with results available in just 15 minutes. Dr. Waqa stressed the importance of confidentiality, explaining that all tests are conducted in private and results are shared only with the individual being tested.

If a positive result occurs, FNU offers extensive support, including counseling and referrals to The Hub Clinic for ongoing care and treatment. Dr. Waqa reassured students by stating, “A positive result is not a death sentence. With proper care and medication, people can live long, healthy lives.”

FNU is committed to combating the stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS and STIs through awareness initiatives and open discussions, fostering a supportive atmosphere for all students.
