Captain Tevita Korovou, the former bodyguard of the late President Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, is now leading the Introduction (Multi) Martial Arts Programme at the Fiji National University’s College of Humanities in Nasinu. Previously serving as the head of martial arts for the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, Korovou’s new role focuses on imparting knowledge of various martial arts disciplines.

The programme has recently been introduced with the goal of providing participants with comprehensive understanding and practical skills in martial arts. Training includes Hapkido, Hosinsul, Haidong Gumdo, Tae Kwon Do, Wuzhu Sanda Boxing, and Judo. It aims to promote a holistic approach, enhancing not only physical fitness but also mental, spiritual, and self-defense skills.

Professor Govinda Lingam, a prominent educator at the college, emphasized that martial arts extend beyond mere physical activity; it represents a path of personal transformation. He highlighted that the programme opens doors for self-discipline and personal growth, accessible to individuals of all ages and abilities. Lingam expressed confidence in Korovou’s ability to create a secure and nurturing environment where students can thrive.

Dr. Victor Alasa, the Associate Dean for Learning and Teaching, described the initiative as a significant step for the university, enhancing educational offerings to align with student interests. He encouraged students to explore the new short course that lasts six weeks, intended to develop students’ skills and confidence through rigorous training under experienced instructors.

Suraj Singh, Head of the Department for Secondary and Sports Education, noted the increased relevance of martial arts in addressing complex societal challenges. Singh reiterated that martial arts training not only teaches self-defense but also fosters mental resilience and humility, helping individuals remain calm in tough situations.

This multifaceted programme underscores the importance of martial arts as a tool for personal development and empowerment within the community.
