Fiji University Launches Transformative Martial Arts Program

Captain Tevita Korovou, a former bodyguard of the late President Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara and head of martial arts for the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, is now the programme instructor for the new Introduction (Multi) Martial Arts Programme at Fiji National University’s College of Humanities located in Nasinu. This recently launched Certificate Programme aims to provide participants with a solid understanding and practical skills in various martial arts disciplines.

The programme includes training in Hapkido, Hosinsul, Haidong Gumdo, Tae Kwon Do, Wuzhu Sanda Boxing, and Judo, promoting a comprehensive approach to martial arts that enhances physical fitness, mental resilience, spiritual growth, and self-defense skills. Professor Govinda Lingam, a Chief Guest and Professor in Teacher Education at the college, highlighted that martial arts transcends physical activity; it represents a journey of personal transformation.

Lingam stated, “We are not just launching a programme, but opening up new opportunities for self-discipline, physical fitness, mental resilience, and personal growth.” He emphasized that martial arts is inclusive, welcoming individuals of all ages and backgrounds. He expressed confidence in Captain Korovou’s ability to create a safe and supportive learning environment where students can thrive and be empowered.

The importance of the life lessons that accompany martial arts training was also underscored, as it teaches individuals to maintain composure amidst challenges and fosters a mindset dedicated to continuous self-improvement. Dr. Victor Alasa, CHE Associate Dean of Learning and Teacher, remarked that this initiative marks a significant step in the university’s mission to provide diverse educational opportunities that align with student interests and aspirations, urging students to consider enrolling in the programme.

Suraj Singh, the Head of Department for Secondary and Sports Education, acknowledged the pressing relevance of martial arts values and skills in today’s complex society. The short course runs for six weeks and aims to improve participants’ overall well-being, self-defense capabilities, and physical fitness. Singh noted that martial arts not only teach self-defense but also transform thoughts and behaviors, helping individuals manage difficult situations and maintain humility.
