Fiji University Launches Transformative Martial Arts Program

The former bodyguard of the late President Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, Captain Tevita Korovou, has taken on the role of programme instructor for the new Introduction (Multi) Martial Arts Programme at Fiji National University’s College of Humanities located at the Nasinu Campus.

Captain Korovou, a former head of martial arts for the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), will lead this recently launched Certificate Programme, designed to provide participants with a solid understanding and practical skills across multiple martial arts disciplines. The training will cover Hapkido, Hosinsul, Haidong Gumdo, Tae Kwon Do, Wuzhu Sanda Boxing, and Judo, promoting a holistic approach to martial arts that enhances physical fitness, mental and spiritual well-being, and self-defense skills.

During the launch, Professor Govinda Lingam, a Chief Guest and Professor in Teacher Education at the College, emphasized that martial arts transcend physical activity, serving as a pathway for personal transformation. He noted that the programme not only offers opportunities for self-discipline and personal growth but is also accessible to individuals of all ages, backgrounds, and physical abilities.

Captain Korovou is set to create a safe and encouraging environment where students can learn at their own pace, feel empowered, and thrive within a community that values mutual respect and growth. He highlighted that the training will impart not only technical skills but also valuable life lessons. “Martial arts teach us to remain calm amid adversity, tackle challenges with determination, and develop a mindset focused on continuous self-improvement,” said Lingam.

Dr. Victor Alasa, the Associate Dean of the College of Humanities and Education, indicated that this initiative signifies a vital part of the university’s commitment to offering educational opportunities that align with student interests and goals. He mentioned that the six-week course aims to equip students with a thorough understanding of various martial arts techniques, with experienced instructors ensuring rigorous training and skill development.

Suraj Singh, the Head of Department for Secondary and Sports Education, pointed out that in today’s complex society, the values and skills derived from martial arts are particularly pertinent.

“The objective of this programme is to promote a comprehensive approach to martial arts training, which will enhance physical fitness, self-defense abilities, and overall well-being,” he stated. Singh further emphasized that martial arts instill the ability to remain composed in challenging situations, fostering humility and resilience among its practitioners.
