Fiji University Launches Transformative Martial Arts Program

Captain Tevita Korovou, a former bodyguard of the late President Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara and head of martial arts in the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, has taken on the role of programme instructor for the newly launched Introduction (Multi) Martial Arts Programme at Fiji National University’s College of Humanities, located at the Nasinu Campus.

The Certificate Programme aims to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding and practical skills in various martial arts styles, including Hapkido, Hosinsul, Haidong Gumdo, Tae Kwon Do, Wuzhu Sanda Boxing, and Judo. The initiative emphasizes a holistic approach to martial arts training, promoting enhancements in physical fitness, mental well-being, spirituality, and self-defense capabilities.

Professor Govinda Lingam, a Chief Guest and Professor in Teacher Education at the College of Humanities and Education, highlighted that martial arts transcends physical activity and serves as a path for personal growth. He emphasized that the launch marks the beginning of new opportunities for students to cultivate self-discipline, physical fitness, mental resilience, and personal development. Lingam asserted that martial arts is inclusive and can benefit individuals of all ages and backgrounds.

He expressed confidence in Captain Korovou’s ability to create a safe and supportive learning environment where students can learn at their own pace, feel empowered, and engage with a community that values respect and growth. Lingam noted that beyond technical skills, the programme imparts vital life lessons that promote calmness in adversity and a focus on self-improvement.

Dr. Victor Alasa, Associate Dean of Learning and Teacher at CHE, stated that the initiative represents a significant step in the university’s commitment to diverse educational offerings, catering to the interests and aspirations of students. He remarked that the short course would provide a solid understanding of various martial arts techniques, with experienced instructors ensuring that students develop the necessary skills and confidence.

Suraj Singh, Head of Department for Secondary and Sports Education, pointed out the increasing relevance of the values and skills taught through martial arts in today’s complex society. He outlined that the six-week course aims to foster a holistic martial arts training approach that enhances physical fitness, self-defense skills, and overall well-being. Singh added that martial arts not only involves combat but also transforms thought processes, helping individuals maintain composure during challenging moments and fostering humility.
