Fiji University Launches Free HIV/STI Screenings to Boost Student Health

Fiji National University (FNU) is providing free HIV/AIDS and STI screening clinics for its students, emphasizing its dedication to student well-being and public health.

Dr. Henry Waqa, FNU’s General Practitioner, highlighted that these screening programs are essential to the university’s initiative aimed at promoting health and wellness on campus.

“Participation in the wellness, HIV, and STI screenings is voluntary, but we strongly encourage all students to take part,” Dr. Waqa stated. “The aim is early detection and prevention of illnesses, especially given the rising number of new HIV cases among young people in Fiji. Early diagnosis can lead to lifesaving treatment and improved health outcomes.”

Currently, free Point of Care Testing (POCT) for HIV, Syphilis, and Hepatitis is accessible at the Nasinu UniClinic, with plans to extend these services to the Natabua UniClinic soon.

“POC testing presents a unique opportunity for our students, as only a few clinics in Suva provide such services,” Dr. Waqa noted.

Students can schedule appointments via email or simply walk in any weekday from 8 am to 3:30 pm. The testing procedure is straightforward and confidential. Participants complete a Voluntary Confidential and Counselling Test (VCCT) form, which gathers basic sexual history information while ensuring strict confidentiality. The test itself involves a quick finger prick, with results available within 15 minutes.

“Confidentiality is critical,” Dr. Waqa stressed. “All tests are conducted privately, and results are only shared with the individual tested.”

In the case of a positive result, FNU offers comprehensive support, including counseling and referrals to The Hub Clinic for ongoing care and treatment.

“We want to assure students that a positive result is not a death sentence. With proper care and medication, individuals can lead long, healthy lives,” said Dr. Waqa.

FNU is committed to combating the stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS and STIs through awareness initiatives and open discussions to foster a supportive environment for all students.
