The 16th Fiji University Games took place last week at the University of the South Pacific, featuring participation from 11 institutions. Previously referred to as the Inter-Tertiary Games, this annual sports event has showcased the athletic talents of university representatives over the years.

The official opening of the event was attended by a large gathering of students at the USP gymnasium, with Youth and Sports Minister Jese Saukuru serving as the chief guest. Organized by the Fiji University Sports Association (FUSA), the competition included 19 different sports and attracted around 1,800 athletes.

A notable addition to this year’s games was the participation of the National Youth Band teams from Nasinu. Mr. Saukuru highlighted the significance of sports and its positive effects on individuals, stating, “Sports has the power to bring people together, to inspire and unite us in a common goal.” He encouraged competitors to engage with passion, determination, and mutual respect.

He also expressed appreciation for the support from university officials, thanking the chancellor, vice-chancellor, and deans for allowing students to participate. Additionally, he acknowledged the efforts of the FUSA Committee and sponsors for their contributions in organizing the event.

According to the Ministry, the tournament serves as a crucial platform for young athletes to display their skills, build resilience and confidence, and foster lasting friendships. FUSA president Alifereti Cawanibuka emphasized that the games were not solely about winning but also about making connections among students.

The university games were strategically scheduled for September 20, coinciding with the International Day of University Sports, allowing students to celebrate in tandem with their peers globally. The tournament garnered strong support from students, many of whom journeyed from different regions, including the North and West, to show their enthusiasm for their respective teams.
