Iliesa Toga, a retired soldier and security guard, has expressed heartfelt gratitude for the overwhelming support he has received from Fijians around the world following a car accident incident that gained significant attention online.
On October 18, around 7:55 PM, Mr. Toga, from Barotu, Saivou, Ra, was involved in a minor accident with Bhavik Verma’s vehicle in Narere, Nasinu. Unbeknownst to Mr. Toga, Mr. Verma recorded a video of their interaction in which Mr. Toga humbly apologized and offered to cover the damages. In the footage, Mr. Toga is seen with his hands clasped, earnestly pledging to resolve the matter amicably.
During their conversation, Mr. Verma requested a payment of $500 for damages, but Mr. Toga assessed the situation as minor and proposed a $200 payment instead. He initially provided $100 and promised to settle the remaining amount the following day. However, the video captured widespread attention, drawing empathy from viewers.
As of November 12, Mr. Toga had received $3,347.38 through M-Paisa transfers from supporters around the globe, demonstrating the generous spirit of his fellow Fijians. In expressing his gratitude, Mr. Toga remarked in his native language, thanking those from the UK, US, New Zealand, Australia, and Europe for their compassion, affirming that love can overcome all obstacles.
Despite the outpouring of support, the situation has taken a concerning turn with reports of alleged threats made against Mr. Verma’s family on social media. Mr. Toga has publicly urged for forgiveness, stating that “violence solves nothing.” He has also filed a police report at the Samabula Police Station, though responses from law enforcement remain pending.
Mr. Verma, who shared the video on the Fijian Memes Hub, clarified that he did not intend for the situation to escalate and expressed regret as things got out of control. His father, Sanjay, has called for increased police patrols around their home due to safety concerns stemming from the threats.
Support for Mr. Toga has not only been financial; many have extended moral support as well. Dinesh Lal, who sent Mr. Toga $202, shared that the video deeply affected him, and mechanic Deo Kumar offered free garage services to assist Mr. Toga, stating that no one deserves such treatment.
Mr. Toga is now considering legal action against Mr. Verma for defamation and has decided to pause the remaining payment until the issues at hand are addressed. Despite the challenges he faces, Mr. Toga is touched by the kindness of the community. Meanwhile, Geraldine Panapasa, media liaison for the Land Transport Authority, highlighted the importance of road safety awareness as part of their ongoing “Drive Safe, Celebrate Responsibly” campaign, crucial during the festive season.
In summary, this incident serves as a reminder of the power of community support and compassion, highlighting both the positive impacts of collective goodwill and the importance of resolving conflicts peacefully.
