Fiji U20 Women’s Team Makes History at World Cup Debut Despite Tough Losses

The Fiji U20 women’s team has returned home after competing in their inaugural FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia.

Although they faced formidable opponents and suffered significant defeats in the group stage—losing 11-0 to France, 9-0 to Brazil, and 9-0 to Canada—the team’s participation marks a significant achievement for Fijian football.

Defender Angeline Rekha expressed her thoughts on the experience, stating, “It’s a dream come true because hardly anyone gets qualified for it. People make sacrifices just to reach there.”

The team’s qualification came as a surprise to many, including the players, who felt that their dedication had finally borne fruit. Rekha highlighted the need for physical fitness and the ability to adapt to the fast pace of international competition.

“For me, it was important to stay fit and to cope with the speed in the game. I wished for my team to get the tempo of the play,” she noted.

Despite the scorelines, the tournament offered the Young Kulas valuable exposure on the international stage, enhancing their experience and understanding of high-level football.
