Fiji U20 Women’s Football Team Set for Historic Championship Debut

The Fiji Under-20 women’s football team presented the traditional i-tatau to President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere at the State House in Suva on Friday as they prepare for the FIFA World U20 Championship. The President lauded the team’s accomplishments and thanked the coaches, management, and players for their hard work.

“This is a truly remarkable achievement, as this is the first time Fiji has a women’s team competing at such a prestigious level in the FIFA World Championship in Colombia. It is indeed commendable,” Ratu Wiliame stated.

Fiji, traditionally known for its rugby prowess, is now gaining international recognition in football. The President noted that Fiji has consistently “punched above its weight” in sports on the global stage and emphasized the significance of the women’s football team’s achievements in ushering a new chapter in Fiji’s sporting history.

He acknowledged the challenges faced by the team, including limited funding, infrastructure, and facilities. Ratu Wiliame praised the coaching and management staff for their unwavering dedication in preparing the team both mentally and physically, expressing his gratitude for their hard work.

The Head of State also recognized the sacrifices made by the players and their families, highlighting the crucial role of team manager Naziah Ali-Krishna. “We will continue to support and pray for the team and the management as you lead and mentor these young ladies who are about to represent Fiji,” he said.

The Fiji U20 women’s team will compete in Group B against France, Canada, and Brazil. This tournament represents a significant milestone for Fiji, showcasing the growth of women’s football in the nation and inspiring the next generation of athletes while uniting the country in support of its team on the world stage.

Fixtures in Medellín, Colombia (Fiji time) are as follows:
August 31: 6pm Fiji vs. Brazil
September 3: 8pm Fiji vs. Canada
September 6: 5pm Fiji vs. France.
