Fiji’s Under-17 girls futsal team will make history when it competes for the first time in the Youth Olympic Futsal Tournament, after being drawn into a four-team pool alongside hosts Senegal, Colombia and Ukraine. The draw sets up a challenging group that will pit the Pacific side against continental champions and established youth programmes from Africa, South America and Europe.

Head coach Jose Gerardo described the qualification and draw as a proud moment for Fiji women’s futsal, saying the squad is honoured to represent the nation on the Youth Olympic stage. “We are very proud to make history for Fiji women’s futsal. This is a big opportunity for our young players to compete against strong nations and show the world the talent we have in Fiji,” Gerardo said, adding that the team knows the challenge ahead “will not be easy” but that they are preparing to give their best.

The tournament will be held in Dakar next year, giving the Fijian side several months to prepare. Officials say preparations are expected to intensify in the coming months as the team moves from domestic competition to an international campaign, focusing on fitness, tactical cohesion and exposure to different playing styles that the draw guarantees. For Fiji, the Youth Olympic event represents not just a single competition but a developmental milestone for the women's game in the country.

Competing in a pool with Senegal, Colombia and Ukraine offers contrasting opponents: hosts who will benefit from home support, South American flair from Colombia, and disciplined European opposition from Ukraine. For a nation where futsal and women’s youth programmes are still growing, the matches will be a valuable barometer of standards and progress. Coaches and administrators expect the tournament experience to accelerate player development and to raise the profile of women’s futsal back home.

The qualification marks a rare appearance on a major global multisport stage for Fiji’s youth futsal, and supporters within the local sporting community have welcomed the news. The achievement underscores recent efforts to broaden sporting opportunities for young women and diversify Fiji’s presence beyond traditional codes. While logistics such as travel, final squad selection and intensified training plans have yet to be finalised publicly, the announcement of the draw is the first concrete step toward the team’s Dakar campaign.

As the months unfold, attention will turn to how the Fiji Football Association and relevant sporting bodies support the squad’s preparations, including potential international friendlies, training camps and resources needed to compete effectively. For the young players who have already earned their place in history, the draw is both an invitation and a test — an opportunity to measure Fiji’s rising talent against some of the world’s best youth futsal programmes.
