The AFL Fiji Tribe team is determined to clinch the Pacific Cup in Brisbane, Australia, taking place from November 14 to 24. This ambitious goal was shared by head coach Alipate Navuso during a recent event where the team received its training kits from sponsors.
Navuso highlighted the rigorous preparations the team has undertaken over the past seven weeks, with daily training sessions scheduled from Monday to Saturday, leaving Sunday as a rest day. The squad is a mix of seasoned players—eight individuals who have represented Fiji in previous world cups (2011, 2014, and 2017)—and nine emerging talents developed through AFL Fiji’s youth programs for ages Under-14, 15, and 17.
The coach expressed pride in having eleven players new to the sport, poised to make their debut for Fiji. He acknowledged the challenges the team faces in securing sponsorships, as AFL in Fiji is often viewed as a lesser sport. However, the team is thankful for the support from their sponsor, Flame Tree.
Navuso emphasized the skills of experienced players combined with the youthful energy of new recruits as the team’s key strength, focusing on fundamental skills and fitness. He lauded the exceptional commitment of the players, who maintained perfect attendance throughout seven weeks of training.
The dedication of players extended beyond training; many have invested their own resources for travel and accommodation in Suva and have relied on family support.
Overall, the AFL Fiji Tribe team’s encouraging preparation and commitment spotlight the growing enthusiasm for AFL in Fiji, empowering players to showcase their talent on a larger stage and contributing to the sport’s development in the country. With a strong mix of experience and fresh talent, there is much optimism surrounding their potential success at the Pacific Cup.
