The Fiji Tribe team of the Australian Football League (AFL) is aiming for victory at the upcoming Pacific Cup in Brisbane, Australia, scheduled for November 14 to 24. Head coach Alipate Navuso shared this ambition during the recent training kit presentation sponsored by Flame Tree.
Navuso indicated that the team has dedicated seven weeks to rigorous training sessions, which take place daily, excluding Sundays. He highlighted that their lineup consists of eight skilled players who have previously represented Fiji in the World Cups held in 2011, 2014, and 2017. Additionally, nine players have emerged from the AFL Fiji pathway programs designed for younger athletes, while 11 new players are set to make their international debuts.
Despite facing challenges in securing sponsorships, largely due to AFL’s status as a lesser-known sport in Fiji, the support from Flame Tree has been invaluable. Navuso stressed that the combination of experienced players and young talent forms the team’s core strength. The focus on mastering fundamental skills and enhancing fitness levels has been a priority during training.
The coach expressed pride in the team’s commitment, noting that everyone has been present throughout the training duration, and emphasized the sacrifices made by both players and their families in preparation for the tournament. Many of the players covered their own expenses to travel for training, demonstrating their dedication and passion for the sport.
As the Fiji Tribe prepares for the Pacific Cup, their determination and hard work illustrate a positive approach, inspiring hopes for a commendable performance in the competition.
This drive and commitment reflect the growing passion for AFL in Fiji, suggesting a hopeful future for the sport in the country.
