The AFL Fiji Tribe team is gearing up to compete for the Pacific Cup in Brisbane, Australia, from November 14 to 24. Coach Alipate Navuso shared this ambition during a kit presentation event with their sponsors.
Over the past seven weeks, the team has dedicated themselves to intense training, with sessions held daily, except Sundays. Navuso highlighted the team’s composition, noting that they include eight seasoned players who have previously represented Fiji in the 2011, 2014, and 2017 world cups. Additionally, nine players who developed through AFL Fiji’s pathway programs are making their senior team debuts, while 11 newcomers will have their first experience playing for Fiji.
Despite facing challenges in securing sponsorships, as AFL is perceived as a minor sport in Fiji, support from sponsors like Flame Tree has been crucial. Navuso believes that the combination of experienced players and newcomers forms the team’s greatest strength. The coaching staff has concentrated on improving fundamental AFL skills and fitness levels.
Regarding the new players, Navuso described them as underdogs eager to validate their place on the field. He praised their commitment to training, noting zero absenteeism during their preparation. The coach also expressed gratitude towards the sponsors and the players’ families for their support, highlighting the financial sacrifices made by players to travel and train.
This team’s dedication and resilience in pursuit of the Pacific Cup showcase their passion for the sport and commitment to representing Fiji proudly. Their collective effort and the support they’ve garnered may well serve as an inspiration for other athletes in Fiji and beyond.
In summary, the AFL Fiji Tribe team is not just preparing for a tournament; they are building a legacy of teamwork, sacrifice, and determination that could have a lasting impact on the growth of AFL in the region.
