Fiji is set to reopen its diplomatic mission in Kuala Lumpur, as announced by Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs Lenora Qereqeretabua during the celebrations for the nation’s 67th National Day and 61st Malaysia Day. The reopening aims to bolster bilateral relations and create additional trade opportunities between Fiji and Malaysia.

While the exact timeline for the reopening was not disclosed, Ms. Qereqeretabua emphasized that Kuala Lumpur will serve as Fiji’s primary focal point for future trade endeavors. She extended her congratulations to the Malaysian government and its citizens on their national day, referencing the longstanding relationship that has existed between the two nations, which includes support from Fiji during challenging periods in Malaysia’s history.

Ms. Qereqeretabua expressed appreciation for the term “Bula Maleya,” mentioned by the Malaysian High Commissioner, which reflects their partnership’s history. She described the Fiji-Malaysia relationship as strong and healthy, expressing eagerness to learn from Malaysia’s developmental progress.

Malaysian High Commissioner to Fiji, Nor’Azam Mohd Idrus, highlighted the similarities between Malaysia’s “Malaysia Madani: Jiwa Merdeka” initiative and Fiji’s own emphasis on unity and sustainability. He explained that the Malaysia Madani framework, introduced by Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, focuses on core values like sustainability, respect, and compassion.

Mr. Idrus pointed out that the ties between the two countries date back to the 1950s, noting the bravery of 1,600 Fijians during the Malayan Emergency, which solidified the bond between Fiji and Malaysia. He mentioned Malaysia’s commitment to fostering business relations globally, including with Fiji, where it consistently ranks among Fiji’s top ten trading partners, reflecting the strength of their bilateral trade.

He also acknowledged the contributions of Malaysian companies like the Carpenters Group and Shangri-La in Fiji and expressed support for their continuous growth and any new entrants looking to make an impact in the Fijian market.
