Fiji is prepared to become the official home for the regional policing centres of excellence as part of the Pacific Policing Initiative (PPI). These centres are intended to provide training, support, research, best practices, and leadership in various aspects of policing.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka made this announcement while addressing the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2024 Pacific Policing Event held in Sagafili Village, Samoa last week. He stated, “A key component of the Pacific Policing Initiative is the creation of regional policing centres of excellence. I am pleased that Fiji is willing to step up as a host for one of these centres. We have the necessary facilities and infrastructure ready to support this regional initiative.”

The PPI aims to streamline policing across the Pacific, built on three main pillars: (1) Regional Centres of Excellence, (2) a Deployable Pacific Police Support Group (PPSG), and (3) a Coordination Hub based in Brisbane. Rabuka also emphasized the potential to enhance Australian support for Fiji’s Black Rock training facility in Nadi, which serves not only military purposes but also functions as a police and disaster relief centre.
