The Ministry of iTaukei Affairs, in partnership with the Ministry of Environment, is set to bolster the enforcement of Fiji’s regulatory measures regarding the import and export of tabua, a traditional whale tooth significant in Fijian culture. Starting January 1, 2025, individuals wishing to bring a tabua into Fiji or take one abroad must first secure an approval letter from the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs. Following this, they are required to obtain an export or import permit from the Ministry of Environment.

It is important to note that tabua export or import is prohibited in the United States, which means the Ministry will not issue approval letters for this specific circumstance. Furthermore, there will be a strict enforcement of a monthly quota, allowing only 16 tabua exports each month. While there is no imposed quota for tabua imports, individuals must still comply with all regulatory requirements, including obtaining necessary permits from their country of origin alongside an import permit from Fiji’s Ministry of Environment.

The issuance of approval letters and permits will follow a first come, first served method, compelling individuals to plan ahead for their tabua-related needs to avoid last-minute complications, which often leads to exceeding the quota. All members of the public are encouraged to align with the regulatory framework under the Customs Regulation and CITES Act to support Fiji’s conservation initiatives both domestically and globally.

This enforcement represents a significant stride towards the conservation of cultural and environmental resources. By regulating the tabua trade, Fiji not only honors its cultural heritage but also plays a vital role in international conservation efforts, promoting responsible tourism and trade practices.

With such proactive measures in place, the government aims to safeguard these precious resources for future generations while ensuring compliance with global standards.
