Fiji Teachers Union Opposes Student School Fees – Find Out Why

The Fiji Teachers Union (FTU) has expressed strong opposition to the Ministry of Education’s proposal to implement student school fees.

FTU General Secretary Muniappa Goundar stated that this measure would undermine the fundamental right of students to access quality education, as guaranteed by compulsory education.

“It will defeat the right of a child to quality education,” Goundar remarked.

Addressing the challenges posed by the migration of students from rural to urban areas, Goundar proposed several solutions.

He suggested improving the infrastructure of rural schools by investing in buildings and upgrading facilities to create a more conducive learning environment for rural students.

Improving teacher incentives is another key strategy Goundar proposed. He emphasized the need for higher pay, housing allowances, and career advancement opportunities for teachers in rural areas.

“Teachers should be given priority in rural areas,” he insisted.

Goundar also stressed the importance of equipping rural schools with modern technology and internet access to engage students effectively.

“Rural schools must have access to modern technology and internet facilities,” he reiterated.

He urged the ministry to develop a quality curriculum and ensure the distribution of high-standard educational materials to rural schools, aligning their quality of education with that of urban schools.

“The ministry must distribute quality educational materials and resources to rural schools,” Goundar said.

Goundar also identified community engagement programmes as vital in reducing migration from rural areas. He advocated for initiatives involving parents and community leaders in the education process to create a supportive environment for students.

Awareness campaigns emphasizing the benefits of rural education and local opportunities should be conducted, according to Goundar.

Finally, he called for the monitoring and evaluation of rural education initiatives to ensure their effectiveness and to make necessary adjustments to improve outcomes.

Efforts to reach Fijian Teachers Association (FTA) General Secretary Paula Manumanuitoga for comments were unsuccessful.
