The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has praised the groundbreaking initiative of green hydrogen transportation from New Zealand to Fiji, coinciding with the launch of an advanced hydrogen dual-fuel generator at the Fiji Gas Lautoka Terminal.
FCCC’s Chief Executive Officer, Joel Abraham, highlighted that this project, spearheaded by Obayashi Corporation and Halcyon Power, in collaboration with Fiji Gas and supported by Japan’s Ministry of the Environment, signifies how international partnerships can create impactful solutions that harmonize economic progress with environmental care.
“This project represents a significant advancement in sustainable energy solutions for Fiji and the Pacific, addressing challenges related to climate change and aligning with Fiji’s national objectives under the Paris Agreement,” Abraham stated.
He emphasized that the FCCC has consistently advocated for sustainability through renewable energy adoption and innovation. Abraham expressed pride in Fiji’s role as a leader in setting regional standards for sustainable practices.
The pilot project employs a holistic green supply chain, using geothermal energy from New Zealand, a renewable and carbon-neutral source, to create ‘green’ hydrogen, which is then transported to Fiji. Upon arrival at the Lautoka Terminal, the hydrogen is released and utilized to power a dual-fuel generator capable of operating on both hydrogen and diesel, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions while providing cleaner, efficient energy.
By broadening fuel sources, hydrogen technology enhances energy security. The dual-fuel systems mitigate dependence on imported fuels, leading to cost savings and promoting Fiji’s energy independence amidst global energy market fluctuations.
Abraham also expressed appreciation to the governments of Japan and New Zealand for their vital contributions. He thanked Japan for its visionary support and New Zealand for its essential role in the production and supply of green hydrogen, acknowledging that this cooperation fosters optimism and commitment to a sustainable future for Fiji and the Pacific.
Moving forward, the FCCC aims to support and promote additional green energy innovations to ensure that Fiji remains a leader in sustainable development within the Pacific region. The commission encourages other entities to draw inspiration from this initiative and collaborate on projects that address critical issues such as climate change, energy security, and economic growth.
In conclusion, Abraham stated, “By adopting innovative technologies, Fiji is setting the stage for a greener future where progress and sustainability are intertwined.”
This initiative not only highlights technological advancements but also reflects a promising commitment to sustainability and collaboration in combating climate change, offering a hopeful outlook for a cleaner and more resilient future for Fiji and the broader Pacific region.
