The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has praised the groundbreaking initiative of shipping green hydrogen from New Zealand to Fiji, alongside the launch of a state-of-the-art hydrogen dual-fuel generator at the Fiji Gas Lautoka Terminal.
FCCC Chief Executive Joel Abraham highlighted that this project, led by Obayashi Corporation and Halcyon Power in collaboration with Fiji Gas and with support from Japan’s Ministry of the Environment (MOEJ), exemplifies how global partnerships can yield transformative solutions that align economic development with environmental responsibility.
“This project represents a significant advancement for sustainable energy solutions in Fiji and the Pacific. It addresses climate change challenges and supports Fiji’s national commitments under the Paris Agreement,” Abraham remarked.
He expressed pride in Fiji’s role as a regional leader in sustainability, underscoring the importance of innovation and international collaboration in achieving energy security while combating climate change, reducing dependency on fossil fuels, and introducing cleaner, more efficient energy technologies.
The pilot project employs a comprehensive green supply chain, utilizing renewable geothermal power from New Zealand to generate ‘green’ hydrogen, which is subsequently transported to Fiji. Once at the Lautoka Terminal, the hydrogen is carefully processed and used to operate a dual-fuel generator capable of running on both hydrogen and diesel. This dual-fuel approach significantly minimizes greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to cleaner energy production.
By diversifying fuel sources, this hydrogen technology enhances energy security for Fiji, reducing reliance on imported fuels, which can lead to cost savings and boosted energy independence amid increasingly volatile global energy markets.
Abraham also acknowledged the support of the governments of Japan and New Zealand, stating, “We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Government of Japan for its visionary support and to the New Zealand Government for its essential role in producing and supplying green hydrogen. Your leadership ignites hope and commitment to a cleaner, greener future for Fiji and the Pacific.”
Looking ahead, the FCCC is eager to facilitate and promote additional green energy innovations to ensure that Fiji remains at the forefront of sustainable development within the Pacific. The commission encourages other stakeholders to draw inspiration from this endeavor and collaborate on projects that address critical issues like climate change, energy security, and economic development.
“By adopting cutting-edge technologies, Fiji is laying the groundwork for a greener future where progress aligns with sustainability,” Abraham concluded.
This initiative not only exemplifies the possibilities within renewable energy but also illustrates how proactive measures can foster collaboration among nations, bringing us closer to a sustainable global future.
