In an important step to bolster disaster preparedness in Fiji, the Fiji Business Disaster Resilience Council, in partnership with the National Disaster Risk Management Office, has launched new disaster awareness materials in Suva. This initiative aims to educate students in years 9 through 13 and their families about the necessity of being prepared for natural disasters, especially as the cyclone season approaches.

Inoke Raikoso, a Senior Education Officer from the Ministry of Education, acknowledged the challenges of instilling a culture of preparedness among students. Many communities remain vulnerable, and several school infrastructures are outdated, some tracing back to the 1800s, complicating efforts to implement effective safety strategies.

Isoa Talemaibua, the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Disaster Management, emphasized the significance of the distributed materials, underscoring that the launch of 10,000 calendars and educational resources represents a commitment to enhancing community readiness. He noted that these materials serve not just as informational tools, but also as everyday reminders for families to prioritize disaster preparedness.

Over the past year, this campaign has already reached over 50,000 homes and nearly 70,000 students, with plans for an additional 50,000 households to receive similar materials this year. This extensive outreach demonstrates a concerted effort to build a resilient and well-informed community as Fiji braces for its peak cyclone season from November to April.
