Fiji Takes Major Step Towards Human Rights Transparency

Fiji has launched its National Mechanism for Implementation, Reporting, and Follow-up (NMIRF), as announced by Attorney-General Graham Leung. This initiative marks a pivotal step in Fiji’s commitment to enhance transparency, accountability, and respect for human rights within the society.

Leung emphasized that establishing the NMIRF is vital for advancing Fiji’s objectives in promoting transparency and accountability. He highlighted that the recently approved Human Rights Taskforce will be essential in fortifying the nation’s human rights framework.

The Taskforce, directed by the Office of the Attorney-General, includes participants from multiple government sectors, such as the Fiji Police Force, Fiji Elections Office, Fiji Bureau of Statistics, and Fiji Corrections Service. This collaborative effort aims to foster comprehensive cooperation on human rights matters across the government.

“Our immediate focus is on developing a web-based tool for monitoring human rights,” Leung stated. He noted that these initiatives would aid in improved reporting and ensure that various government agencies address human rights issues. He expressed gratitude to Fiji’s development partners for their support in achieving this goal, asserting that the Taskforce’s formation underscores the nation’s dedication to upholding human rights.

“This initiative signifies our commitment not just to meet international obligations but to foster a society where everyone’s rights and dignity are upheld and safeguarded,” he added.

The Human Rights Taskforce also aligns with Fiji’s promise to implement the eleven recommendations from the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) accepted in 2019. Heike Alefsen, the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights Regional Representative, remarked that the NMIRF signifies a new phase in Fiji’s ongoing efforts to promote and protect human rights. She pointed out that the NMIRF is designed to enhance the country’s capacity to systematically implement, monitor, and report on a broad range of human rights recommendations received from various international bodies.
