The Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS) is considering the use of drones and surveillance vessels to heighten border security in various regions, including Lau, Lomaiviti, and parts of the Northern Division. Chief Executive Udit Singh shared that the integration of surveillance drones is anticipated to improve real-time monitoring, thereby enhancing the detection of illegal activities.
During his presentation to the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence concerning the FRCS’s annual report for 2020-2022, Singh noted the plans to establish container examination facilities in Suva and Lautoka. These facilities will employ X-ray technology to scrutinize containers, aiming to minimize the flow of contraband. Additionally, Singh mentioned ongoing collaboration with the Fiji Navy, highlighting the joint efforts to improve the country’s border security, particularly in areas where resources are limited.
Strengthening border security is crucial, Singh emphasized, as it protects vital economic interests tied to trade and tourism. This commitment to enhancing maritime security aligns with recent discussions within Fiji’s law enforcement community regarding the need for inter-agency partnerships to address increasing challenges related to drug trafficking.
In previous initiatives, FRCS has received advanced drug detection technology, such as the First Defenders and TruNarc devices, provided by the Japanese government and supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). This technology allows for real-time assessment of hazardous substances and drugs, empowering authorities to respond swiftly to threats.
The proactive measures being taken by FRCS, combined with technology enhancements and collaborative frameworks involving various law enforcement agencies, reflect a unified approach to crime prevention and community safety. The ongoing international partnerships, particularly with countries like Japan, signify a hopeful and robust strategy to combat illicit activities and protect Fiji’s borders effectively.
Overall, these developments foster optimism for a safer future as Fiji continues to enhance its capabilities in safeguarding its borders.
